How to work with your accent (A TAKEOVER with Nic Redman)

Hello. Thanks for tuning in. This is a cheeky little takeover by me, Nic Redman, "Podcasting in Three Easy Steps." So strap in.

Getting Acquainted with Your Accent

First and foremost, let's talk about getting comfortable with your accent. Understanding your accent is crucial. Take time to record yourself and listen back in a relaxed setting. Pay attention to how you sound and how others perceive you. Identify the unique characteristics and trends in your accent. This exercise will help you appreciate how your accent fits into the podcasting realm and what it's like for your audience to hear it through their headphones.

Embrace Your Accent as Part of Your Identity

Your accent is a part of your identity; it's what makes you, well, you. There's no need to alter or mask it for your podcast. In fact, embrace it wholeheartedly. For instance, I'm proudly Irish, specifically from Northern Ireland. I use my local dialect deliberately and proudly. I incorporate Northern Irish words and phrases like "crack" (meaning fun) into my podcast. It becomes a unique part of my brand, and my listeners appreciate the authenticity. So, make your accent a distinctive quirk of your podcast. Use local terms, share anecdotes, and educate your audience about the beauty of your accent. It's a fantastic opportunity to share a piece of your culture with the world.

Ease Your Audience into Your Accent

To ensure your audience fully embraces your accent, consider starting your podcast with a few introductory lines that aren't critical to the main content. This provides listeners with a moment to acclimatize to your accent before diving into the core topics. If you launch straight into the podcast's central theme with your distinct accent, some listeners might miss important information. These introductory lines serve as a gentle transition, encouraging your audience to listen more attentively from the outset.
