How to include video in your podcast

Here at Podcasting in Three Easy Steps, it may come as no surprise to you that we are big fans of audio. An audio, on its own, is one of the most intimate ways you can communicate with an audience: through podcasts, radio, and audiobooks.

But there's no escaping it—video is currently one of the best ways to build an audience and grow that audience on different platforms. So here are three easy steps for how to include video from the very beginning.

Short Videos to Help Promote Your Podcast

These don't need to be anything fancy. You can keep them simple, short, and sweet. It can just be you telling your audience what is in the latest episode or what you learned from your guest.

You can then share these on Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, or YouTube shorts.

Get Your Podcast on YouTube

YouTube is going big into podcasting and has become one of the biggest platforms for people to find, listen to, or watch podcasts. But before you go out and buy a camera, lights, and makeup, know that you can easily put a video podcast online using just your audio.

You can do this by using one of the audio-to-video or social media apps, such as Headliner, WAV, or Canva. Simply take your audio and podcast artwork, and combine the still image with your audio file to turn it into a video file.

Then you can upload that to YouTube. I'd also recommend using YouTube's own captions to improve accessibility and boost discoverability.

Use Riverside or Another Video Recording Platform to Record Your Podcast

I use Riverside to record podcasts with guests all over the world. It's been a game changer for remote podcast recording. Now, I normally just record the audio, but the video option is there if I need it. Now, Riverside and other video recording platforms aren't perfect.

They require fast broadband speeds, and it can take a bit of time to cut a video clip and then upload it. And of course, it takes time to get used to using them.

But if you start with recording and then using a clip from the video recording, you'll get used to using video from the start, and it won't be a big leap to then upload the whole video recording of your podcast onto YouTube or your own websites in due course.
